Insomnia(c)

Insomnia(c) is a fever dream-like experience that unfolds within the confines of a bedroom. The game invites players into the creative and personal space of its creator. Inspired by surreal art, this experimental game explores the intricacies of the human mind. Through object interactions, players unlock doors to a deeper understanding of the creator's psyche, transforming the virtual space into a symbolic canvas that blurs the lines between reality and imagination.

Developed within a period of six weeks, the project is the succession of three month research around the question: How video game spaces can represent the character's mind?
It marks the end of my game design bachelor.

My Role

Lead Artist / Environment Artist / Game Designer / Programmer / Music Composer / Filmmaker

This project gave me the occasion to integrate diverse form of art in one digital space. It taught me crucial knowledge on how to manipulate video game spaces as a way to represent the theme of the mind

Main Tasks
  • Research around a thesis question
  • Creation of the game design and visual concept
  • Videos creation & Integration of diverse art medium in one scene
  • Coding of the game
  • Lighting & Final rendering
  • Collaboration on the music composition

Based on the layout of my personal flat, the game's concept was to immerse the player in a world that exists between dream and reality. To achieve this, players would be invited to interact with various objects that present surreal and bizarre behaviors.

Certain objects would offer more advanced interactions, while others would mainly serve to disturb the players. The main idea was to transform the flat into a living entity by assigning personas to the different items.

As a final concept, the game was scaled down to the bedroom, referencing the idea of dreaming. Only the objects whose behavior presented a solid concept were integrated into the final experience.

Video Projections

The video projections in Unity were created using a spotlight to which a light cookie with an animated texture is attached. The scene also contains a video player to which the same animated texture as the one on the light cookie is also carrying. This technique helped in giving a similar result than the one of video mapping that takes into consideration the architecture of a room. (see image)

Lighting

The lighting was playing the role of building the atmosphere as well as attracting the player to intractable objects. A mix of warm and cold colors have been used as a way to represent emotions

Each of the videos projected in the room represented different places and memories. Various effects and superposition of images helped create a dream-like aesthetic, blurring the line between what is real and what is not.
